iFD and Schnellecke Logistics Saxony are testing ‘Pick by Vision’
Schnellecke Logistics Sachsen, a logistics service provider for the automotive industry, has tested the use of pick-by-vision technology using smart glasses as part of a pilot project at its site in Glauchau.
Digitalisation offers a range of new opportunities to make warehouse processes more efficient and reduce the workload on staff. The best way to determine which technology is right for a particular application is to test it with staff.
For this reason, Schnellecke Logistics Saxony and iFD GmbH carried out a pilot project to test a version of the smart glasses from data glasses (data-glasses.com) in practical use. iFD Software handled the control of the smart glasses, communication with the overlying system, and provided the algorithms for object recognition and the associated process control. In this specific application, the glasses were used to support order picking using augmented reality (AR). The employees involved were equipped with special versions of the smart glasses, which display the necessary work instructions directly in the worker’s field of vision. Thanks to the modularity of the smart glasses hardware, it was also possible to combine them with a pick-by-voice solution.
During the test phase, employees at Schnellecke Logistics Saxony worked with the new smart glasses hardware for at least three days and were subsequently interviewed about their experiences. The findings from the survey are currently being incorporated into a second test, which is already planned and will be carried out in February 2020.
